Touch Therapy at Ashgrove
“We are very proud to have received Centre of Excellence status from the trust.
Following some introductory sessions delivered by Dilys here at school, Ashgrove began visiting Touch Trust with two challenging classes more than ten years ago. The learning curve all round was steep. As more and more pupils were seen to benefit from these lovely sessions, we decided that the way forward was to train some of our teachers as session leaders, so that the program could be delivered to more pupils. This took place in 2008 when Kirsty, Richard, Ruth and Chris trained, then Lauren, Debbie, Cheryl and Zoe, and most recently Lea, Pauline, Mandy and Sue. With our own leaders we needed a dedicated room to deliver the sessions, and this was achieved in 2008 with the generous help of parents.
We now have nine leaders and an almost full timetable of sessions. We work towards delivering the classic touch therapy session, but with the diverse needs of our children we often adapt sessions, or focus just on the relaxing themes, until pupils are able to make transitions, which is such an important skill with our pupils with autism.
In conjunction with Erw’r Delyn and Maes Dyfan school we now hope to make Touch Therapy at Ysgol y Deri an integral part of the alternative curriculum, accessible to all pupils at any time of need.”
